Another initiative aimed at countering Trump, Governors Safeguarding Democracy, was announced Wednesday as a “nonpartisan alliance of governors that works together to uphold and fortify American democracy.” Govs.“We strengthen the foundations of American democracy by catalyzing collaboration across state lines.
The Governors Safeguarding Democracy alliance touts developing playbooks, reinforcing state institutions, and designing affirmative strategies as some of the ways it will work to push back on the alleged “ever-increasing threats of autocracy.” Gov. Gavin Newsom called a special session in the California legislature to “safeguard California values and fundamental rights in the face of an incoming Trump administration.” He, on Tuesday, meeting with the White House and California congressional delegation about pushing forward key efforts before Trump retakes the White House.
