Democratic Congressman Lloyd Doggett urges Biden to withdraw from 2024 race after poor debate performance, citing voter uncertainty.
"Instead of reassuring voters, the President failed to effectively defend his many accomplishments and expose Trump's many lies," Rep. Lloyd Doggett said in a statement, in part. "Recognizing that, unlike Trump, President Biden's first commitment has always been to our country, not himself, I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to with draw.
I respectfully call on him to do so."" Doggett, who has represented Austin since 1995 and is himself 77 years old, praised Biden's record, saying he "saved our democracy" in 2020, but said Biden has left voters unsure of his future performance. "Instead of reassuring voters, the President failed to effectively defend his many accomplishments and expose Trump's many lies," Doggett said in a statement, in part. "Recognizing that, unlike Trump, President Biden's first commitment has always been to our country, not himself, I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to with draw. I respectfully call on him to do so." Notedly, Doggett compared the circumstances Biden finds himself in to those of former President Lyndon B. Johnson, who famously did not run for reelection in 1968, leading to a power vacuum among the Democratic Party with no clear successor. Ultimately, Republican Richard Nixon was elected president. " never been what I think to be concerned with whether or not the party, or for that matter if the people within the party, would punish him for this," Robert Stein, a political science professor at Rice University, said. "He speaks his own mind. And for that matter, I think he genuinely thinks that Biden is a weak candidate and is doomed to lose the election. " Since the presidential debate last Thursday, some Democrats have questioned whether or not Biden should remain on the ticket in order to defeat former President Donald Trump. Doggett is the first congressman to make the call; whether or not he will be the last remains to be seen. In an interview with CBS Austin, Austin's other congressman, Greg Casar, was mum on whether or not he would make a similar call as Doggett, or even if he would stand in opposition to Doggett's call. "Right now, our candidate is President Joe Biden," Casar said on Tuesday. "If, between here and the convention, we decide that the President is still in this race, we're going to unite and make sure that Donald Trump is defeated by President Biden. Or if it's another candidate, then we will unite around that candidate. That's what I know."
