Democratic attorneys general filed lawsuits on Tuesday in Massachusetts and Washington state to challenge President Donald Trump 's attempt to revoke birthright citizenship. Trump signed an executive order on Monday aiming to restrict birthright citizenship to individuals with at least one U.S. citizen or permanent resident parent. This move faces significant opposition, not only from the 23 Democratic attorneys general but also from civil rights groups who have already filed their own lawsuit.

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong, leading a group of 19 attorneys general, filed the lawsuit in Massachusetts federal court. The lawsuit asserts that Trump's plan constitutes a 'flagrantly unlawful attempt to strip hundreds of thousands of American-born children of their citizenship based on their parentage.' It argues that Trump seeks to 'abrogate this well-established and longstanding constitutional principle by executive fiat.' Four other states - Washington, Arizona, Oregon, and Illinois - filed a separate lawsuit in Washington state, stating that the states would 'suffer immediate and irreparable harm' if Trump's measure is implemented, affecting thousands of people. Nationwide, the lawsuit estimates that approximately 12,000 babies born each month 'will no longer be considered United States citizens.' The 14th Amendment to the Constitution has long been interpreted to guarantee birthright citizenship for anyone born in the United States, excluding diplomats' children. The amendment clearly states: 'All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.' Trump's proposal does not take effect for a month, providing courts ample time to block it before implementation.The Massachusetts lawsuit was filed in a federal court district under the jurisdiction of an appeals court with a majority of judges appointed by Democrats. The Supreme Court ruled in 1898, in the case of United States v. Wong Kim Ark, that a man born in San Francisco to Chinese parents was a U.S. citizen. Many legal experts believe that despite the Supreme Court's current 6-3 conservative majority, including three Trump-appointed justices, it would likely reject the administration's novel interpretation of the law
