Collier is still well behind in the polls, but his ground game has pushed Patrick to run...

Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Democrat Mike Collier are competing in the Nov. 8 general election.Democrat Mike Collier entered the 2018 race for Texas lieutenant governor with low name recognition, little campaign cash and the baggage of a 20-point loss in the race to become the state’s top accountant four years earlier.

The two-term lieutenant governor is in the middle of a 131-stop tour across Texas, where he’s been visiting voters in a double-decker bus advertising his smiling face and “principled conservative leadership.

Some of that contact has paid off in very public ways. Collier had raised more than $3 million by July, far outpacing his 2018 totals, with another campaign finance report scheduled to be released next week. His campaign war chest still pales in comparison to the lieutenant governor’s, with Patrick reporting more than $25 million on hand the same month.

“Patrick's message has been the push to an extreme to try to impress Donald Trump, and that's what he does instead of trying to fight for the people of Texas,” he said. “I think that's why you've seen so many Republicans come over to Mike. It’s time for the Texas of my childhood, where you had a lot of bipartisan, cooperative work.”

The lieutenant governor has refused to release a public schedule of his current tour, so it’s not clear how many people he plans to meet and where. Democrats gained some ground in June after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, dismantling federal abortion protections, but it’s an open question whether that decision will push more left-leaning young people and women to cast ballots.
