While bad cholesterol raises the risk of heart disease, its good counterpart helps to reduce it.
Good cholesterol is important for health, but new research suggests it may be tied to a serious cognitive condition.
Sources of good cholesterol include avocados, whole grains nuts and oily fish. Meanwhile sources of bad cholesterol include red meat, full-fat dairy, butter and fried foods. High levels of LDL cholesterol, or "bad" cholesterol, pose risks for serious heart conditions like strokes and heart attack. It occurs when too much of the waxy substance is present in the blood, building up in the arteries and reduces bloody supply to the heart, according to charity Heart UK.
The average HDL cholesterol level was 53.7 milligrams per deciliter . Healthy levels are considered to be above 40 mg/dL for males and above 50 mg/dL for females.
