Fall was supposed to mark the beginning of a new normal, with a return to schools and offices. Now, with some plans pushed back and Delta variant cases on the rise, many say life in limbo is giving them a new kind of Covid-induced anxiety.

This latest phase of the pandemic has introduced even more uncertainty into life and work, leaving many people feeling deeply unsettled, counselors and career coaches say.For Michael Gandolfi, a 22-year-old recent graduate of Arizona State University who’s interviewing for four jobs, there is dread about picking the wrong one, or not seizing an opportunity now in case life goes back on hold in the fall.

Indoor dining, workout classes, concerts. These once commonplace events are coming back into daily life. But because of Covid-19, everyone now has a different level of comfort. What happens in the brain as we decide what’s risky or not? Photo illustration: Laura Kammermann Emily Anhalt, a clinical psychologist and the co-founder of Coa, a mental health startup, said it is common for people to push away difficult emotions when they are living in survival mode. This past spring, Dr. Anhalt said many of her clients were considering major life changes. After months of not feeling in control of their lives, they were talking about switching jobs, moving to a different city or getting out of a relationship.
