A Delta flight from Minneapolis to Toronto crashed upon landing, injuring 21 passengers. One passenger shares the details of his experience, from the forceful impact to the disorientation of being upside down. The investigation is ongoing, with officials examining potential causes including weather conditions.

A passenger on Delta flight 4819 recounted his harrowing experience of the plane crash at Toronto Pearson Airport. Delta flight 4819 departed from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Monday morning. The CRJ-900 aircraft encountered difficulties while landing at Toronto Pearson around 2:30 p.m., ultimately crashing and coming to rest upside down slightly off the runway. Following the impact, parts of the aircraft detached, and a fire ignited, according to officials.

All 80 people on board, 76 passengers and four crew members, were successfully evacuated. Delta Air Lines reported that 21 injured passengers were transported to local hospitals, and by Tuesday morning, 19 had been released. Officials stated that the injuries ranged from minor to critical, but none were considered life-threatening. Passengers commonly reported back sprains, head injuries, anxiety, as well as headaches, nausea, and vomiting attributed to fuel exposure. Pete Carlson, a passenger traveling from Minnesota to deliver a speech at a paramedic conference, described the terrifying moment the plane crashed. 'For at least a brief period of time, I thought, I’m not getting off this plane,' Carlson said. He explained that the descent was uneventful, but the landing was extremely loud and forceful. He likened it to the plane sliding across the surface before flipping over. 'The next thing I know, I’m upside down and my seatbelt was still belted,' he recounted, describing the pandemonium within the aircraft as passengers screamed and yelled. 'I released my belt, dropped to the ceiling which was now the floor. And the whole thing, in the moment, was very, very disorienting and very confusing to be upside down,' he added. After the impact, Carlson's paramedic training took over, enabling him to assist fellow passengers. While waiting inside the plane, he vividly remembered the overpowering smell of gasoline. 'I’m looking out the window and just watching it flow down the window,' he said. 'I sent my wife a text and just said I love you. I love our children.' Passengers were eventually evacuated and moved to a safe distance from the wreckage. 'It was interesting to be standing on the tarmac. It was equally disorienting,' he recalled. 'The wind was just blowing the snow. It just felt sort of like a movie.' Carlson intends to fly back home to Minnesota after attending the conference. 'I think the flight will be really strange,' he said. 'I hope to just be a passenger sitting on an airplane landing safely back in Minnesota.' The investigation into the crash is ongoing. It remains unclear what specifically caused the landing problems and what factors contributed to the crash, including potential weather conditions. 'At this point, it’s far too early to say what the cause of this accident might be. However, we will share more information once we’re able,' stated TSB investigator Ken Webster in an update on Tuesday. The voice and flight data recorders have been retrieved from the cockpit and sent to a laboratory for analysis. Investigators are diligently examining the wreckage and runway, according to Webster. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is leading the investigation, receiving assistance from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, the FAA, Delta Air Lines, and Mitsubishi
