The delta COVID variant, which first appeared in India, is about 60% more transmissible than the Alpha variant that dominated the U.K. last fall, a new report says.

June 11, 2021 -- A new report from Public Health England shows how swiftly the highly transmissible delta strain has become the dominant COVID-19 variant in the United Kingdom.

Cases are doubling between 4.5 and 11.5 days, depending on the region, with confirmed cases of the variant rising from 29,892 to 42,323 since June 2, per the PHE report, which notes that the quick increase in cases is partly due to new, speedier testing methods. “With numbers of delta variant cases on the rise across the country, vaccination is our best defence,” Harries said in the PHE report. “If you are eligible, we urge you to come forward and be vaccinated. Remember that 2 doses provide significantly more protection than a single dose.”
