Delta and Airbus recently announced they're moving this concept from testing to real-world operations — with deployment planned for the latter half of this year.

Birds are the masters of flight. And these avian creatures have been a source of inspiration for human flight for centuries. The designs of early aircraft, pioneered by figures like Lilienthal, Etrich, and the Wright brothers, were based on the flight of birds.Experts are once again looking to birds for inspiration to turn air travel sustainable. Birds like geese save energy by flying in close V formation.

The planned objective is to conduct a test of the “rendez-vous” maneuver, which entails the pairing of two passenger aircraft over the Atlantic Ocean. For instance, a flight from New York and one from Miami, both bound for London. While maintaining the required 1,000ft altitude separation, they will attempt to fly just 1.2 nautical miles apart—a distance proven in lab tests to maximize fuel savings.Current aircraft typically maintain a separation of three to five nautical miles .
