Hilarious take on AFL storm, ‘Messi’ Twitter spat as Cats nail Mad Monday - Gallery
Whateley last month was unfortunately caught up in a social media storm, hitting out at social media trolls for spreading a fake tweet that quoted him comparing Messi to Miers. The fake post had Whateley holding a football with the quote: “Gryan Miers is to AFL what Leo Messi is to soccer. Messi may kick more goals, but Miers scans the field just as well. Maybe even better than Messi does.”Whateley replied to a Twitter account that posted the image.
So on Monday — as only Cats players can — Miers dressed up as Messi and Holmes as Whateley, with Holmes holding a large cut-out of that Whateley tweet.Whateley, an AFL 360 co-host and SEN broadcaster, saw the funny side of it and gve the costumes the tick of approval.Holmes and Miers weren’t the only highlights from the Cats’ Mad Monday celebrations, with a veteran trio also in good form.
Tom Hawkins, Isaac Smith and Cam Guthrie rubbed salt into Adelaide’s wounds, re-enacting the controversial behind call from the Crows’ heartbreaking loss to Sydney. Hawkins and Guthrie dressed as goalposts while Smith came as Crows player Ben Keays, with club legend Billy Brownless lending a hand as goal umpire.Smith had the shot at ‘goal’ and celebrated as Brownless signalled the ball hit the post.Or was it?
