New figures from Public Health Scotland show that 3,302 bed days were lost to delayed discharge in July – up from 2,876 in June
The number of people waiting in the region’s hospitals despite being medically cleared to leave has hit its highest level since the middle of winter.South Scotland Labour MSP, Colin Smyth, said: “This problem is not unique to our region, people across the whole of Scotland are suffering and while our amazing local NHS are working as hard as they can to get people out of hospital, they can’t work miracles.
In July, an average of 104 people in hospital as a result of delayed discharge every day, compared to 96 in June. NHS Dumfries and Galloway’s chief operating officer Julie White told the health board last month there were “stubbornly high levels” of delayed discharge and that work with care homes was “proving fruitful”.The figures from Public Health Scotland show the total number of days lost in July across the country was 56,138 – up from 51,905 the previous month.
A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: “We are working hard with health boards and health and social care partnerships to create the necessary capacity to deal with emerging pressures through our delayed discharge and hospital occupancy action plan to ensure patients are assessed and discharged with the appropriate care package as quickly as possible.
“This underscores how invaluable our health care and adult social care support staff are to all who require additional support to live independently at home or in the community and we would like to thank them for their continued hard work.”
