There could be more space for animals at a new Sugar Land shelter in the coming years.
In 2019, voters cast their ballots in favor of a proposal to fund a new shelter's design and construction"to address projected animal capacity from the city's growth," according to theDesign was originally supposed to begin this year, but then"COVID happened," said Don Specks, the city's animal services manager."So that kind of pushed a lot of things back as far as our timelines and everything.
Specks said they still have to wait for the city council"to pass the tax rate to fund the project" via the budget process. Construction is now aimed to start in 2025, pending the tax rate's passage, he added, . Upon completion, the new shelter has a projected capacity of 60 dog enclosures and 100 cat enclosures, according to Specks. The existing shelter's current capacity is 43 enclosures for dogs and 75 for cats.
There's also a different location envisioned for the new shelter. The current one is on Gillingham Lane, but Specks said the new one would be built near the police station. "They haven't gotten the exact designs of where, but on that property and nearby is where we would begin the building of the new shelter," Specks said.. There's an"endemic" overpopulation problem with stray animals in the South, based upon factors such as climate and spaying and neutering regulations, according to Specks.
