Sarah McBride will become the first openly transgender member of Congress after winning election to the House Tuesday in her home state of Delaware, according to a projection by the Associated Press. McBride has served as a state senator since January 2021. She was endorsed for the House by the likes of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y.
The win comes against John Whalen, who ran on the Republican ticket for Delaware’s at-large congressional district. McBride acknowledged the win in a post via X Tuesday night. “Because of your votes and your values, I am proud to be your next member of Congress,” she wrote. “Delaware has sent the message loud and clear that we must be a country that protects reproductive freedom, that guarantees paid leave and affordable child care for all our families, that ensures that housing and health care are available to everyone and that this is a democracy that is big enough for all of us.”Jackson Walker on X at @_jlwalker_ for the latest trending national news.
