Three San Diego Section girls records are broken at prestigious meet, two of them long-standing marks

There are certain high school track meets that coaches circle at the start of the season because there’s a good chance for outstanding performances because of quality competition.

Del Norte’s Hannah Riggins wasn’t in the least disappointed when she placed fourth in the Invitational 800-meter run because her time, 2:06.69, shattered the second-oldest record in the books, taking down the 4:08.00 by Mt. Carmel’s Lesley Noll in 1985 — just one year after the Los Angeles Olympic Games.“I still can’t believe it,” said Riggins, a senior headed to Princeton. “I wanted to go under 2:08, of course, but 2:06? It’s insanity, I just can’t fathom it.

That foursome had sophomore Emily Russo on the leadoff leg, junior Ella Echsner second, Riggins running third and sophomore Paige Echsner on the anchor. “I went out too fast,” said Riggins. “That 59 was faster than I wanted — I was looking for more like a 61 or 62. But I put everything out there and although we wanted a sub-9, running 9:00.77 is an incredible feat.”
