City would lease one to two acres on state-owned fairgrounds for the construction of at least 61 units

The Del Mar City Council approved an exclusive negotiating agreement this week with the 22nd District Agricultural Association to consider the construction of affordable housing on the fairgrounds. The agreement authorizes Del Mar City Manager Ashley Jones to negotiate with the 22nd DAA, sometimes called the fair board, for the lease of 1 to 2 acres on the state-owned fairgrounds and within the city for the construction of at least 61 units of affordable housing.

Director Michael Gelfand said he was willing to negotiate with Del Mar, but he had mixed feelings about the proposal. 'I'm very concerned about the housing crisis in San Diego County,' Gelfand said at the fair board meeting. 'I just don't feel that the Del Mar Fairgrounds is the place to solve the problem.' Another director, Lisa Barkett, said it was too soon to begin exclusive negotiations with the city.
