Rams Coach Jay Norvell took a jab at Colorado’s Deion Sanders, saying, “When I talk to grown-ups, I take my hat and my glasses off.”
.” That was interpreted by some as a nod to a long-standing rivalry from the many decades Colorado and Nebraska spent as fellow members of the Big 12 and its earlier iterations.
In April, Cornhuskers Coach Matt Rhule had drawn a pointed contrast between his eagerness to “coach my guys” and other, unnamed coaches’ excitement over “the transfer portal.” At the time, Sanders was making waves with his aggressive strategy of clearing out a Buffaloes roster that had won just one game in 2022 under his predecessor and using the portal to reshape the squad in his first season.
Shown at another point in the practice, Sanders said, “He ain’t had no business.” Asked by someone off-screen if he knew what Norvell had said, Sanders responded, “That he wasn’t raised that way.”“See, now he’s messing with my mama,” Sanders continued. “He’s put my mama in it now.” Three times during his remarks to the players, Sanders had them finish a sentence he began about Norvell’s comments by chanting, “Personal.”“I’m minding my own business, watching some film, trying to get ready, trying to get out here and be the best coach that I could be, and I look up and I read some bull junk that they had said about us, once again,” the 56-year-old coach told his team.“I’m a grown man,”Sanders, who was wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses.
Just in case he was kidding when he said it, I figured I’d check out the actual video for proper context. Oh… Jay Norvell said it. And he meant it. 😎
