The defense has officially rested in the federal trial of Ryan Routh, the 59-year-old man accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump.

Ryan Routh called witnesses in his own defense on Monday in the federal criminal case against him. The direct exam has been disorganized and full of awkward moments, according to I-Team Chief Investigator Mike Magmoli.

The defense has officially rested in the federal trial of Ryan Routh, the 59-year-old man accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump at Trump International Golf Course last September. Before he told the judge he wanted to act as his own attorney, Routh was previously represented by government-appointed Public Defenders. His defense team hired an expert witness, a sniper, to test fire the rifle recovered at the crime scene. Routh’s questions have dealt with the performance of the rifle, which he wants the jury to believe was cheap to purchase, mostly malfunctioning, not the weapon for a professional assassin.Routh seems to be suggesting he intended to point the rifle at Trump and then flee the scene, never to fire a shot. But the witness has opined about the sniper's hideout at the fence line and the capability of the weapon, broken but working. At several points, Routh has trailed off, seemingly looking for his next question, he has breathed heavy into the microphone and repeated “OK OK.”Following the defense's conclusion, it's believed that prosecutors might not present a rebuttal. The court has broken for lunch, with jury instructions scheduled for later this afternoon. Closing arguments from both sides are expected to begin tomorrow.
