After hearing from the state’s witnesses over a three-day period, the jury in the capital murder trial of William Chase Johnson is now listening to witnesses for the defense.
Johnson is charged with capital murder for the 2019 death of Lowndes County Sheriff ‘Big John’ Williams
Four of the witnesses said they were on the QV gas station property in Hayneville before and during the fatal incident between Johnson and the sheriff. The fifth had already left before the shooting happened. They say that the bonfire they planned to go to that evening had not yet started by the time they arrived in town.
Lowndes County Sheriff"Big John" Williams was killed in a shooting on Nov. 23, 2019 at a QV gas station in Hayneville.Three of the witnesses told the jury that they had never heard Williams announce himself as the sheriff, described him as wearing a jacket and brown pants, and said that he did not show a badge. However, a key witness named Slade Ivey confirmed the sheriff did identify himself during their one-on-one encounter.
Two of the witnesses claim that the sheriff had his hands on Johnson and that he pulled out his gun, but Ivey said he did not see either of those things.
