The defendants — four people and the Sandusky-based Lake Fish Co. — also must pay a combined $24,120 to the Victory Soup Kitchen and a combined $13,000 in restitution to the Ohio Division of Wildlife, according to court records and the natural resources department.
An investigation by the natural resources department found that 112 walleyes, one steelhead, one yellow perch and three whitefish were stolen. The defendants pleaded guilty in Erie County Common Pleas Court to several charges, including 13 misdemeanor counts of petty theft, one count of fifth-degree felony theft, two misdemeanor counts of receiving stolen property and nine misdemeanor commercial fish violations.
The business, Trent and Carr originally were charged with racketeering, but Erie County prosecutors dismissed the charges in plea agreements, according to court records. In 2021, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife began investigating the business after receiving a report that fish meant for charity were stolen by the company and its employees, the agency said.
