Anurag Chandra, who said he was ‘extremely, extremely mad’ at the time also blamed the driver of the car that contained five other teenagers for the crash.
Anurag Chandra, taking the witness stand in his defenseon Monday, April 24, testified that he drank 12 beers in three hours before getting into a roadway confrontation with six teenagers and was “extremely, extremely mad” before the cars collided and the teens’ car struck a tree, killing three passengers.
Chandra said the late-night knock, which he called a “pounding” but a video played Monday suggested was less forceful, frightened himself, his wife and twin 16-year-old daughters. He testified that he believed that Ivascu might be a sexual predator. Chandra said he hoped to catch up to the boys, tell them never to repeat their actions or return to his home and obtain the car’s license plate number and call the police.
Under cross-examination from Senior Deputy District Attorney Kevin Beecham, Chandra admitted to driving 99 mph before the collision and that doing so was not safe.“No,” Chandra replied. “But someone came to my house to assault my wife and daughters and I wanted to hold them accountable. I had no intention of harming anyone.”
Prosecutors contend that an enranged Chandra chased down the teens in his 2019 Infinity and sideswiped their car. Both drivers then made a U-turn on Temescal Canyon Road before Chandra intentionally struck the Prius from behind several times, sending it sliding into a tree, prosecutors say.and 16-year-old Corona residents Daniel Hawkins and Drake Ruiz died. Campusano, Joshua Ivascu, 14, and Joshua Hawkins, 13, suffered broken bones and other injuries.
