Theresa May has sacked defence secretary Gavin Williamson after a leak inquiry found there was “compelling evidence” that he was responsible for leaking details of the National Security Council meeting on Huawei.
In an unprecedented letter to one of her most senior ministers, the prime minister said that an investigation led by the cabinet secretary Mark Sedwill had secured the “full cooperation” of the other attendees at the NSC meeting, and that those interviewed answered questions and “engaged properly” with the probe.In a meeting between Williamson and the PM on Wednesday afternoon, May presented the defence secretary with what she says was “compelling evidence” that he was behind the leak.
