Guitarist Phil Collen, who joined the British metal band as it was taking off, reflects on his life in rock.

Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen recalls his rock ’n’ roll awakening as clear as a photograph. “I went to my first concert in ’72, which was Deep Purple ,” he said via Zoom from a tour stop in Florida . “It was the ‘ Machine Head ’ tour, so it had ‘ Highway Star ,’ ‘Smoke on the Water,’ all that stuff. I was front row. The year after, I saw David Bowie on the ‘ Ziggy Stardust / Aladdin Sane ’ tour and it was absolutely mind blowing.

When Def Leppard rocked a San Antonio Walmart opening Beginning with 1983’s blockbuster album “Pyromania” and its massive 1987 follow-up, “Hysteria” — two of the best-selling albums of all time with combined worldwide sales of more than 35 million — Collen’s rocket ride was a white-knuckle liftoff. “My first gig with Def Leppard was at the Marquee Club in London, which holds 400 people if you’re cramming them in,” he said.
