It was the same story different chapter for the District 22-6A football teams Friday...

Atascocita's Nick Cordova scores the first of his two touchdowns standing up. Cordova sliced up Deer Park's defense for well over 100 yards rushing in the 48-7 win. With the rain and cold wind, the weather was miserable all the way around. And if you were a Deer Park High School football fan, that's how you were describing the state playoff contest, too.

Because of the awful conditions, kickoff was delayed 75 minutes, prompting a new start time of 8:15 p.m. That's as close as Deer Park, in finishing the season with a 9-2 record, got to winning the playoff game. Well, it was also looking good with 1:39 remaining in the first quarter when quarterback Rafael Robles and Hayden Smith hooked up for a 39-yard touchdown reception, creating a 7-7 score.

The Atascocita contingent of Nick Cordova, with a pair of touchdowns, Zion Brown, Braylon Conley, Justin Montgomery and Darrell Gill scored the touchdowns that broke the 7-7 tie. Yusuf Ibraham kicked a pair of field goals. The Eagles did a superb job on containing Erasmo Canales, District 22-6A's 1,000-yard rusher. At halftime, he had just 14 yards over nine carries.
