Watkins’ 14 strikeouts power Deer Park to 22-6A championship
As evidenced by the row of zeroes on the scoreboard, Deer Park pitcher Preston Watkins was suburb on the hill Tuesday night for the newly-crowned district champions of 22-6A.In another sign that life is returning to normal, the Deer Park High School baseball program is back to its dominating self.
In the first meeting of the two co-champions from 2021, Deer Park starting pitcher Preston Watkins gave the coaching staff a fabulous outing, an outing that they’ll need when the 6A state playoffs arrive next week. With Dobie closing against last-place South Houston, the Longhorns could take over second place Friday. That would mean Memorial likely faces second-place North Shore if the two rivals don’t finish in a tie.
Watkins struck out 14 Mavericks, meaning Deer Park’s fielders were only needed seven times to record outs all night long.
