SAN ANTONIO - The general hunting season for deer gets underway this upcoming weekend. However, ongoing drought conditions may continue to have an impact.
"Last year was a really rough year, the year before was pretty dry. But we had good rains in the spring this year, and from what we're seeing it's going to be a good year this year," says Levi DeLeon. DeLeon works at the Quintanilla Ranch in Tilden, which is a hunting ranch for Escondido Hunting which offers hunting excursions and accessories. DeLeon is excited for the hunting prospects this season.
"What we've seen is an abundant amount of quail this year. I mean, the quail has been phenomenal. And our dove hunts this year are phenomenal," says DeLeon. The sentiment is the same at Texas Hunter Products on San Antonio's east side, where General Manager Cody Borgfeld says the recent weather has been getting customers in the hunting spirit.Borgfeld says more people have picked up hunting since the pandemic, and he expects the excitement to continue.
"There was a large increase in hunting license sales, fishing license sales, stuff like that," says Borgfeld.
