Wildlife officials report a rise in deer attacks, emphasizing the dangers of keeping wild deer as pets. A woman in North Carolina was gored by a captive buck, highlighting the potential for aggression, especially during mating season. Authorities are reminding the public that keeping deer without permits is illegal.
PEBBLE BEACH, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 14: A deer is seen on the course during the second round of the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links on June 14, 2019 in Pebble Beach, California. The NCWRC said one attack happened on October 21 when a woman stopped by an acquaintance’s home in Holly Ridge to pick up a table.
That’s when officials said she was charged and gored by a 3-and-a-half-year-old white-tailed buck. SHIRLEY, NEW YORK - JULY 25: A blacktail deer walks through Smith Point County Park during the early morning hours on July 25, 2023 in Shirley, New York. The agency said the deer involved had been illegally kept in a fenced-in yard for more than three years. “A buck you raise may seem friendly, but whenever he gets to mating season, he might use those antlers against you,” said April Boggs Pope, a wildlife biologist. The deer’s antlers punctured the woman's shoulder and neck, and officials said she also suffered several scrapes and bruises from both the antlers and hooves. The buck was wearing an orange collar. The homeowner told officers the deer had been captured as a fawn -- a violation of state law. With deer season running from September through January, wildlife officials said they’ve seen an increase in deer-human encounters this year. The NCWRC reports incidents of people or pets being attacked by deer in Rockingham, Randolph, Wilkes, Iredell and Cherokee counties.Wildlife officers cited the resident, and a district biologist was called in to euthanize the buck. “At this time of year, the buck may not be afraid of you and may actually fight back,” Pope said. “They have very sharp hooves, and their antlers can inflict serious damage.”Officials are reminding the public that keeping a wild deer without proper permits is illegal in North Carolina and can result in fines or criminal charges.Cedar Park Police Lt.
