Violet and Xaden's story takes a dark turn in the explosive conclusion of . With cryptic messages, memory wipes, and a suspiciously convenient marriage, readers are left with more questions than answers. Let's unpack the major plot points and explore some of the most popular theories about what truly happened.

Violet has a lot of questions, and so do we. What’s going on with Xaden? Are the dragons okay? Did someone wipe our memory? Should we have carefully read all 527 pages instead of skimming ahead to get to the “spicy” scenes? (Okay, maybe that’s just a personal question.) The ending of has left a lot of readers deeply confused.

Some of that seems unintentional; the first few chapters are packed with new characters, knotty political conflicts, and unfamiliar locations that don’t appear on the map. (Is Lewellen a person or a place? Turns out, both!) However, the ending was purposely cryptic, as Yarros loves a shocking cliffhanger. “I already know what it is before I start the book and I drive for it with glee,” she has said. Readers clearly love it too: for many coming up with crackpot theories about who’s a secret venin and hunting for foreshadowing in every line is half the fun. (Do you think Violet is somehow “going to be the death of” Xaden? He sure does!) But if you’re a little lost, don’t worry. Here’s a breakdown of the major plot points and some theories about what’s really going on. Xaden Riorson and Violet Sorrengail split up during the battle of Draithus. Xaden’s venin sage summons him to a canyon outside the city, then wounds his dragon, Sgaeyl, and traps her under a net. Xaden decides, just as he did at the end of , that channeling power from the earth is the only way to save his loved ones. This turns him more fully venin, which is bad. But it also gives him the power to send out a massive wave of shadows in a “final act of resistance,” which is good. Xaden’s shadow surge (which is described as “devouring the field in the fury of an onyx storm” — chug!) eviscerates all the wyvern attacking the city, kills some random venin goons, and knocks out both Xaden’s sage and his new venin “brother.” (???) Elsewhere on the outskirts of Draithus, Violet is battling Theophanie (who we learn is the “dark wielder version” of her bitchy dead mom). The venin maven has Violet’s dragon, Tairn, pinned under a net just like his mate, Sgaeyl. When Xaden’s shadows roll through the field and knock Theophanie to the ground, Violet fatally stabs her with a marble dagger, then passes out.In the last chapter Violet wakes up next to Imogen in the courtyard at Riorson House. She’s wearing a wedding ring made from a Riorson family heirloom and there’s a piece of paper in her pocket. It’s “an official blessing” of her “legal, binding marriage” to Xaden, which was conducted by the head priestess of Dunne’s temple. And there’s a message from Xaden scrawled on the back: “Don’t look for me. It’s yours now.” Violet realizes that she doesn’t remember anything that happened in the past 12 hours. She turns to Imogen, who can wipe memories, and asks “What did you do?” Imogen answers, “What you asked me to.” THE END! The surface level read is that “It’s yours” refers to Tyrrendor. Throughout the book there’s a lot of chatter about who might succeed Xaden as the province’s leader if he dies. Presumably Violet becomes the duchess of Tyrrendor if they’re legally married and Xaden is “dead” (or holed up in some venin lair). But the note almost certainly has a double meaning, because it’s no fun if it doesn’t. Many readers have guessed that “It’s yours” actually refers to Xaden’s soul, which was last seen flaking away like “pieces of ash from a fire” as he turned more fully venin. Throughout the book, Xaden keeps telling Violet “you own my soul” (this is less creepy in context). So it seems likely he’ssaying, “Don’t look for me. I’m just a venin husk now and you have what’s left of my soul.” Or perhaps Violet is going to get to know Malek, the god of death, of “May their souls be commended to Malek” fame. TikTok user It’s unclear. After he embraces the power of the dark side, Xaden lets a horrified Sgaeyl into his mind. They appear to debate whether Tairn and Violet will go along with his plan, but we’re not privy to that dragon-rider mind meld. Then Sgaeyl says, “Even if she agrees, no one will—” and Xaden counters, “Someone owes me a favor.” It seems that Sgaeyl is saying “even if Violet agrees to marry you and become duchess of Tyrrendor, no one’s going to perform a wedding between a human woman and a dude with red veins and bulging venin eyes.” But Xaden knows a guy — or gal, actually. Earlier in the book, Xaden mentions that the high priestess of Dunne’s temple told him, “she is in my debt and owes me whatever favor I see fit.” It’s likely that Xaden’s plan goes well beyond “put my girl on the throne of Tyrrendor, but this time in anway.” In the same scene, Xaden tells Sgaeyl, “You saw what happened. It is the only way.” Is it possible he knows there’s no other option because he spent the past few months plotting with his new pal Aaric, whose signet is precognition? We don’t know. It appears Violet agreed to Xaden’s plan
