Light from the near-full moon could interfere with this year's viewing, but experts say it's still worthy of looking for the brightest meteors.
The annual Geminids meteor shower sometimes produces bright fireballs, like this one seen over Florida. The 2024 Geminids will be peaking on Dec. 13 and Dec. 14, but strong moonlight could block the view of the faintest meteors.The weather is turning cold again, but a trip outside to scan the night sky might be worth the chill, becauseis already active, but it will be at its best from the late-night hours on Friday, Dec. 13, into the early morning hours on Saturday, Dec. 14.
“While the moonlight will wash out the fainter meteors, it’ll still be possible to see some of the bigger and brighter meteors,” Space.com notes, “so it’s definitely worth a look if you have clear skies.”
