A woman's dog died after the Decatur Animal Services shelter refused to release it, despite her claims that the dog had been injured in a car accident. On January 1st, around 6:55 p.m., a police officer responded to a call about an unattended dog hit by a car. The dog, named Sophia, suffered injuries to her hind legs and was taken to the Decatur Animal Services shelter.
While Sophia was at the shelter, her owner, Allison Howard, attempted to pick her up and take her to an emergency vet, but the shelter's policy prohibited releasing animals after hours. After several unsuccessful attempts to retrieve Sophia, Howard was informed the following morning that her dog had died in the shelter.
