) - A Vietnam combat veteran who spent years in therapy healing from what he endured on the front lines says he’s finally found closure in an unexpected way. Fred Grimm, a former combat medic, shared his emotional story during a Veterans Day luncheon Tuesday at the VIA Health Fitness and Enrichment Center, where a crowd of veterans and families was moved to tears.

Grimm said he was drafted in 1969 and was serving as a combat medic in Vietnam when he came face-to-face with a Vietnamese soldier. “I knew one of us was gonna die,” Grimm said. “I pulled the trigger of my M16, fired, and he was killed.”“I picked that hat up and I stuffed it in my shirt and brought it home with me,” Grimm said. Grimm said he kept that hat for over 50 years. A few months ago, an insurance agent, Cam Johnson, was referred to Grimm’s home. While she was there, Grimm asked if she could translate a message written on the soldier’s hat because she speaks Vietnamese.“The hat says: Tôi sẽ luôn nho đến ban, ban cua tôi, and what it means is ‘I will always remember you, my friend,’” said Johnson, an independent contractor for United Healthcare Medicare Solutions. In a video taken that day, moments after hearing those words, Grimm explained why that message lifts a heavy weight off his shoulders. “It’s like that man was saying to me, one of us might die today, and it’s alright, I’m still your friend,” Grimm said. “That changed my life forever, meeting Cam.” After sharing his story, Grimm was awarded the Quilt of Valor, a handmade quilt presented to one veteran who has been touched by war. “What an honor to receive this, and I will cherish this forever and as long as I’m alive,” Grimm said.“It takes a lot of bravery and courage to stand in front of people and to tell them that I shot someone in Vietnam,” Johnson said. Grimm wants to encourage other veterans on Veterans Day to share their stories with loved ones or trusted friends.
