Police in Mansfield, Ohio, have announced that a cold case dating back to 1981 has finally been solved. Debra Lee Miller, 18, was found murdered in her apartment, and new DNA technology and investigative techniques have linked the crime to James Vanest, 68, who lived above her at the time. Vanest admitted to lying to investigators during the initial 1981 inquiry and refused to cooperate with detectives in 2024. He reportedly pointed a gun at law enforcement when confronted and barricaded himself in a hotel room.
MANSFIELD, Ohio - Mansfield police said Monday that a decades-long cold case is now considered solved. Debra Lee Miller was 18 years old when she was murdered inside her apartment on West 3rd Street 1981.
“There were stains located around her body, as well as some of the items she was beaten with,” says Chief Bammann.Throughout the years her case was reopened several times. In 2021, investigators said new DNA technology and innovative techniques has linked the crime to James Vanest, 68. “Mr. Vanest lived above Debra during the night of the homicide. He had been questioned during the initial investigation, but was never identified as a suspect,” says Chief Bammann. After the discovery was made, detectives interview Vanest.Vanest also admitted to lying to investigators during his initial interview in 1981. “Mr. Vanest ended the second interview in 2024, before it could even begin. He stated he felt like Detective Butler was building a case against him and he refused to speak and requested an attorney,” says Chief Bammann. “It is our understanding that when confronted by Marshalls and the Canton regional SWAT team Mr. Vanest pointed a gun at them and barricaded himself inside that hotel room,” says Chief Bammann. “The DNA evidence collected from multiple items, when analyzed alongside the findings in Detective Butler’s investigation, establishes proof beyond a reasonable doubt that James Vanest committed the murder of Debra Miller,” says Chief Bammann. In April 1981, Debra Lee Miller was murdered in her apartment. The case has been reopened and now police say with new DNA technology they have a suspect.Proposed tariffs on China will affect small businesses like toy stores
