The 1929 crash? Too short-lived. Bitcoin? Too small. The dot-com implosion? Almost, but nah. The housing collapse in 2007? Nope.
As you can see from the chart above, the Japanese stock market lost more than $2 trillion from peak to trough. What’s more, Maggiulli points out that Japanese land values have dropped by $8 trillion since the late 1980s/early 1990s. First, he looked at the size of the overall market for each asset class. This would rule out tulip mania and bitcoin BTCUSD, +0.23% , both of which saw collapses that would only impact a relatively small group of investors.
Lastly, he gauged the amount of time it took for the underlying asset to bounce back to its prior highs. The Wall Street crash of 1929, for example, saw the stock market recover relatively quickly back to its September 1929 high.
