A project intended to make two major thoroughfares in uptown Dallas more pedestrian friendly has evoked loud opposition from community members.
Residents look at operation maps after a public meeting held by the city's transportation and public works department Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024, at William B. Travis Academy, to discuss proposed transportation and safety improvements on the upcoming project to convert McKinney and Cole avenues to two-way streets.
Fallier said he had seen cars speeding 40 to 50 miles per hour while walking his dog near Carlisle and Bowen streets. The speed limit on the two roads is 30 miles per hour.Multiple residents voiced concerns about how the two-way conversion could limit parking near Cole Park during peak traffic hours, Monday to Friday mornings and evenings when most office workers are expected to travel back and forth. A change in on-street parking could also impact property value, they said.
Still, some residents said the data in the initial 2015 traffic impact study may not fully represent the new developments and density that have mushroomed in the area in the past 10 years. Though a mid-size city compared to Dallas, Louisville’s example appears in several research studies to showcase the benefits of the change.The uptown project could be consequential as it also sheds light on the future of the McKinney Avenue Trolley.
