Tropical Storm Debby struck the U.S. Southeast in early August 2024, bringing with it over a foot of rainfall across several states. The storm first came ashore as ain Florida’s Big Bend region on August 5 and then weakened to a tropical storm as its center moved inland.
The map above shows rainfall accumulation over the five-day period ending at 7:59 p.m. Eastern Time on August 7, 2024. These data are remotely sensed estimates that come from IMERG , a product of the GPM mission, and may differ from ground-based measurements. For instance, IMERG data are averaged across each pixel, meaning that rain-gauge measurements within a given pixel can be significantly higher or lower than the average.
As Debby continues northward as a tropical depression, forecasts call for heavy rain to move across the mid-Atlantic and Northeast on August 9–10. According to the NWS, flash flooding spurred by the heavy rainfall continued to be the storm’s biggest threat.has been activated in response to Tropical Cyclone Debby, supporting stakeholders such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency .
