Fish and chips on a Friday dates back centuries
There are few things finer than chippy tea. Succulent fish and perfectly cooked chips - smothered in salt and vinegar, of course.
Millions of families across the country tuck into the UK's national dish every week. In fact, for some, it is an absolute must on a Friday - with no exceptions. Chippy tea on a Friday is thought to be a tradition that began with Catholics eating fish on Fridays because they could not eat meat . Heading to or driving or walking past any chippy in Nottinghamshire proves there are plenty who still follow that tradition. But there is a question worth asking when it comes to your chippy order. While many fish and chip shops serve up plenty of other options these days - from pies to kebab - there is a question that nobody can seem to agree on.
Whether it be cod or haddock is not the one bound to spark the most debate. It is that of which accompaniment you choose to smother your meal in. Mushy peas are bound to be a popular choice in our county but plenty will opt for curry sauce, baked beans or gravy. Curry sauce has proven so popular that some chippies now even offer different kinds of it.
