A heated debate is unfolding in Congress over the SAVE America Act.

, a proposal supporters say would strengthen election integrity, but opponents argue could make it harder for millions of Americans to vote. The measure has already passed the U.S. House, and its future now rests with the U.

S. Senate, where lawmakers are debating the bill this week.Under the proposal, voters would be required to provide two forms of identification at the polls, such as a passport or birth certificate. The bill would also require people to register to vote in person. That would mark a significant change in Alabama, where voters currently must show one form of ID and can register online or by mail.U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., supports the proposal and says it is aimed at increasing confidence in elections.Tuberville also argued Democrats oppose the measure for political reasons and claimed non-citizens could influence elections.Opponents of the bill point out that claims of widespread voter fraud have been rejected in court and say the legislation targets a problem that is not supported by evidence. The Southern Poverty Law Center , based in Alabama, warned the proposal would disproportionately affect rural voters, low-income residents, and people who do not have easy access to the documents the bill would require.Laura Williamson, a senior policy advisor for Democracy and Voting Rights Policy at the SPLC, said many voters do not have the limited set of documents that would qualify. “The vast majority of folks don’t have one of the very few documents that would be accepted under this bill,” Williamson said. The SPLC also raised concerns for women who changed their last name after marriage. The group cited estimates indicating about 69 million married women nationwide may not have a birth certificate that matches their current legal name, which could complicate efforts to meet new documentation requirements.Another provision drawing scrutiny would require the sharing of voter data with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. When asked about that requirement, Williamson said the SPLC is concerned about the handling of sensitive personal information. We looked into claims about non-citizen voting. Multiple states and non-profit organizations that track election issues report that non-citizen voting is extremely rare and it is illegal. With the bill now before the Senate, it’s still unclear whether it has enough support to pass. If the measure were to become law, critics say it could affect voters in Alabama, where a majority of residents do not have passports and many may not have access to an original birth certificate.Man charged with murder in Lowndes County shootingFuneral arrangements announced for late Civil Rights leader Dr. Bernard LaFayette, Jr.
