Death Valley National Park is set to reopen Sunday, though some areas will remain closed longer.

After shuttering to the public for nearly two months — the longest closure in its history — Death Valley National Park is set to partially reopen to guests Sunday, according to a press release from the park. They’ll be greeted by a rare new feature: a temporary lake at Badwater Basin that is several miles long and a few inches deep and may dry up within weeks. “This is a really special time,” said Superintendent Mike Reynolds.

from park spokesperson Abby Wines. Some of the park’s most popular features are also slated to reopen, including Zabriskie Point, Golden Canyon Trail, Desolation Canyon Trail, Artists Drive, Natural Bridge Trail, Badwater Basin, Mosaic Canyon Trail and Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. “There are some additional areas we are working on that might or might not be open,” Wines wrote. “All other roads and areas are closed.

also inquired about what the closure has meant for park’s creatures. Park biologists have a sense it’s been good for wildlife, Wines said, but no concrete numbers were available. “I’ve noticed that the coyotes that routinely begged for food along the roads are not there anymore,” Wines wrote.
