Turkey quake kills at least 20, rescuers dig for survivors
ELAZIG, Turkey - A powerful earthquake struck eastern Turkey late on Friday, killing at least 20 people and collapsing buildings in towns near the centre of the tremor, which was strong enough to be felt in several neighbouring countries.
Sixteen people were killed in Elazig and four more in the neighbouring province of Malatya, Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said early on Saturday. Some 920 injured were in hospitals in the region, it said. Teams worked through the night with their hands, drills and mechanical diggers to remove bricks and plaster from the ruins in the city where the overnight temperature dipped to -8 degrees Celsius.
State media in Syria and Iran both reported the earthquake was felt in those countries. Local media in Lebanon said the cities of Beirut and Tripoli also felt the quake. AFAD warned residents not to return to damaged buildings because of the danger of further aftershocks. It said beds, blankets and tents were being sent to the area where some people sheltered in sports gymnasiums.
