U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Thursday that the prisoners whose death sentences were commuted by former President Joe Biden have moved to supermax facilities.on social media platform X and suggested the prisoners’ conditions in the maximum-security buildings will be “egregious.
” “Joe Biden’s last-minute commutations of death row prisoners are a stain on our justice system and a betrayal of the families of victims. I was honored to host some of those families here at @TheJusticeDept in May,” Bondi wrote. “We have begun transferring the monsters Biden commuted to Supermax prisons, where they will spend the rest of their lives in conditions that match their egregious crimes.” In December, Biden commuted the death sentences of 37 people to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The commutations were consistent with the ban his administration imposed on federal executions, the former president explained in a“Make no mistake: I condemn these murderers, grieve for the victims of their despicable acts, and ache for all the families who have suffered unimaginable and irreparable loss,” Biden said. “But guided by my conscience and my experience as a public defender, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Vice President, and now President, I am more convinced than ever that we must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level.” “In good conscience, I cannot stand back and let a new administration resume executions that I halted,” he continued.to Department of Justice employees that the punishment is fair for the "most egregious" crimes. “The Department's leadership sought – and received from former President Biden – commutations for the death sentences of 37 murderers that Department of Justice prosecutors had tirelessly secured over the past three decades. These actions severely undermined the rule of law and grievously damaged the public's trust in the justice system,” the attorney general said. “For the victims of these horrific crimes and the loved ones left behind, these actions betrayed our sacred duty and broke our promise to achieve justice.” Trump issued an executive order the first day of his second term which set a policy of counteracting “politicians and judges who subvert the law by obstructing and preventing the execution of capital sentences.” The policy was for the purpose of ensuring that laws which authorize capital punishment are respected and faithfully applied, the president said.
