Steven Nelson, convicted of the 2011 murder of North Texas pastor Clint Dobson, is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. This execution marks the first scheduled for Texas in 2025.
A man facing execution for the 2011 murder of a North Texas pastor is scheduled to die this week. Steven Nelson , convicted and sentenced to death in 2012, is set to be executed by lethal injection on Wednesday, February 5, according to records from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Prosecutors alleged that Nelson suffocated Clint Dobson, a young pastor at NorthPointe Baptist Church in Arlington, by placing a bag over his head while he was writing a sermon in his office.
Nelson left Dobson's body on the floor and also severely beat the church secretary before fleeing in her car, using the victims' stolen credit cards for a shopping spree. Authorities apprehended Nelson after finding blood from both victims on his shoes and studs from his belt at the church. During his trial, jurors unanimously agreed that Nelson posed a significant threat to society and deserved the death penalty. 'It is hard for me to fathom that you did what you did for a car and a laptop and a phone,' Dobson's father-in-law, Phillip Rozeman, said in a statement after the sentencing. 'The world is going to miss a leader. It's sad to know all the people that won't be helped because Clint is not here.' Nelson's execution has been postponed once before. Originally scheduled for October 2024, prosecutors requested a delay until February, citing the need for more time to develop arguments regarding the sentencing, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Nelson's case is one of several high-profile executions scheduled in Texas for 2025. Richard Tabler, convicted of murder, is set to be executed on February 13. Serial killer David Wood is scheduled for execution on March 13. Moises Mendoza, convicted of strangling a 20-year-old in Collin County, will be executed on April 23. Nelson's execution would be the first in Texas since fellow death row inmate Robert Roberson's execution was delayed at the last minute. Roberson, convicted of killing his 2-year-old daughter in 2002, was scheduled to die in October 2024 but the Texas Supreme Court intervened after a subpoena from a Texas House committee. The Supreme Court has since cleared the way for Roberson's execution, although a new date has not yet been set.
