‘Staying home could also save the life of a cherished child or grandchild too' 😔

coronavirusIsmail Mohamed Abdulwahab, 13, died at King’s College Hospital on Monday after testing positive for Covid-19. He had no underlying health conditions.

Scientists say older people are more at risk of dying from coronavirus, but Ismail’s case shows that younger people are not immune. His family have been left ‘beyond devastated’ by his death and were unable to be at the hospital as they are now self-isolating. Dr Simon Clarke, associate professor in cellular microbiology at the University of Reading, said: ‘The lesson from countries such as China is that, while the old are much more likely to die from coronavirus infection, the young are certainly not immune from it.’He added: ‘The message [from the government] so-far has seemed to be that by following the guidance, you might save the life of a cherished parent or grandparent.

Confirmation of Ismail’s death came just a few hours after England’s deputy chief medical officer, Jenny Harries, said fatalities in young people highlighted the need for everyone to follow the public health advice. NHS England had earlier confirmed the death of a teenager, 19, who had tested positive for Covid-19 and had no existing medical issues.Research into people dying without health conditions has been deemed ‘essential’
