Garfield's wife was the true hero all along. Death By Lightning is a four-episode miniseries that recounts James A. Garfield's presidency and assassination at the hands of Charles J. Guiteau. Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen star as Garfield and Guiteau, respectively. There's a scene towards the end of Death by Lightning in which Lucretia Garfield meets with Charles J. Guiteau before his execution and tells him that his"legacy will amount to nothing," that when the history books are written, he won't ultimately matter. Makowsky told Tudum that this encounter did not happen in real life. He created this scene specifically for the show as a way to show that Guiteau lost in more ways than one. Garfield's assassin believed that he played an extremely important role in the politician's election to the presidency and that he deserved a place in the administration. When he failed to secure what he believed he deserved, he decided to shoot Garfield, who died two months later in September 1881. Guiteau was sentenced to death the following year after a highly publicized trial. Guiteau was determined to ensure Garfield knew he was instrumental in the man's political success. He went to extreme lengths to get close to Garfield and went to even greater lengths to punish Garfield after feeling betrayed. Guiteau thought he was a much more important person than he actually was, and the Death By Lighting scene with him and Lucretia was meant to prove just the opposite. Hearing directly from Garfield's widow that his memory and legacy are tarnished and that he's not important was the"worst news" he could get, according to Makowsky, which is why he created this scene, despite it not being part of the historical record. It's also a key scene for Lucretia's growth as a character on Death By Lightning. Makowsky went so far as to call her a quiet hero. If her husband had not been assassinated, she would have been a"really positive role model" and had a major impact on the role of First Lady. After all, Lucretia didn't feel completely comfortable leaning into the"traditional mores" that were expected of presidents' spouses back then. Even though Garfield's presidency and life were cut short by Guiteau, Death By Lightning is a new opportunity for Americans to understand his story and what more he could have brought to the presidency had he been able to finish his term, according to author Candice Millard, who wrote Destiny of the Republic, the book that Death By Lightning is based on. Garfield is basically an"obscure footnote" in history, but Millard wants that designation to change and put the emphasis back on him instead of on Guiteau, and her book and the miniseries are critical to making that happen.
