It is becoming increasingly difficult for global fund managers to ignore China

MSCI announced on Thursday that it will increase the weight of China A shares in the MSCI Indexes by increasing the inclusion factor from 5% of total market capitalization for large-cap stocks to 20%. The proposal to increase the weight of China A shares “garnered overwhelming support from investors,” the company said in a statement on Thursday after market hours.

Eric Moffett, a portfolio manager for the T. Rowe Price Asian Opportunities Equity Fund thinks the inclusion factor translates into $40 billion worth of fresh inflows from active funds alone. “This is still rather small compared with the size of China’s domestic stock market, but we are very excited about the opportunity set in this market and its growing relevance to investors outside of Asia,” Moffett says.
