I hope you can help me, because I’m feeling a little—well, OK, a lot—like I’ve entered the Twilight Zone. I am a forward-thinking, open-minded person. Politically liberal and a longtime champion of gay rights. My older brother is gay. My youngest son is gay. I love them both and I swear I don’t have a homophobic bone in my body. But I feel like the ground is shifting in a way I can’t make sense of.

It’s confusing to discover, so many decades into one’s life , that things may not be quite as one has supposed.
