Henry Cavill 's appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine was a standout moment, but Marvel Studios arguably missed an opportunity to elevate this sequence and address a persistent casting dilemma regarding Wolverine in the MCU . Despite hanging up his claws and retiring from the iconic role after 2017's Logan, Hugh Jackman returned as James Howlett, a.k.a. Wolverine, in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine .
His inclusion alongside Ryan Reynolds' Merc with a Mouth propelled the Phase 5 film to become one of Marvel Studios' most successful installments, but it also introduced some complexities. Deadpool & Wolverine established 20th Century Fox's X-Men universe as an alternate reality in the MCU's multiverse, designated as Earth-10005, paving the way for its titular antiheroes to eventually integrate into the MCU's primary continuity. The film capitalized on Marvel's recent exploration of the multiverse by introducing numerous variants of its iconic heroes, encompassing Wolverine's iterations such as Old Man Logan, Patch, and even a Wolverine of comic-accurate height. However, one particular variant showcased how others could have been more effectively introduced, and Marvel regrettably opted against this casting choice. Hugh Jackman portrayed seven distinct Wolverine variants in Deadpool & Wolverine, with only one exception. The sole variant not played by Jackman was portrayed by former Superman actor Henry Cavill, marking a surprise cameo appearance from the Man of Steel, The Witcher, and Argylle star. This made him the third actor to embody Wolverine in live-action, following Hugh Jackman and Troye Sivan from the opening of 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The prevalence of Jackman portraying most of the Wolverine variants, however, might have inadvertently confined the studio's creative options when contemplating the mutant's future in the MCU.
