Ten people were killed and 30 injured when a vehicle drove into a crowd on New Orleans ' famed Canal and Bourbon Street in the first hours of New Year's Day, according to NOLA Ready, the city’s emergency preparedness agency. It all happened around 3:15 at the world-famous Canal and Bourbon Street in the French Quarter when a truck plowed through a crowd of people.Fans were shocked to learn what happened while they were asleep.
WSBT spoke with two people who were in the exact location of where the tragedy took place just hours before it occurred.With 15 dead, over 30 are injured and Bourbon Street is closed for an FBI investigation. Many Notre Dame fans made the trip to New Orleans to start the new year off by watching Irish take on Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. \AUSTIN WARD said, “I think shock was my initial reaction especially like like knowing we were so close and that we literally just left that area.” Ward is from Elkhart and was planning on going to the game. He says he heard the sirens, but didn't think anything of it. “We actually laid down around 3, 3:30. We heard the sirens didn't think anything of it but then when we woke up this morning, that's when we first found out about Everything,” said Ward.Hodge Patel said he woke up to his phone buzzing with texts to see if him and his son, Elliott, were okay. Puzzled, he turned on the TV to see that the attack happened in the exact spot him and his son were at just hours before. “I was stunned to see it and then I started looking at other pictures that we had taken and I'm like oh my gosh that's exactly where where we were at,” said Patel. “I think if you don't go forward with the game, obviously you have to have safe conditions, but then the terrorist win, right? That's what they wanna do so they want to take away our freedom and our opportunities and all that sort of stuff so I think from that standpoint it's important to go forward with the game,” said Patel
