A traffic stop in Humble, Texas, turned deadly when a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper fatally shot a 17-year-old male passenger. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. near Will Clayton Parkway and Village Tower Drive. The trooper pulled over a Kia Sorento for suspected drug activity and asked both the driver, a woman, and the teenage passenger to exit the vehicle. During a search of the teen, the trooper reportedly felt what seemed to be a firearm on his person.
According to Jim Willis, a private investigator and licensed police officer, this triggered a series of events. The teen, realizing the trooper felt the concealed weapon, pushed away and attempted to flee on foot. The chase ensued, with the teen running approximately 200 to 300 yards into a grassy area. As the situation escalated, the teen reached into his waistband, where the trooper had previously felt the weapon, prompting the officer to draw his firearm and ultimately shoot the teen.Following the shooting, the trooper provided first aid and secured the area. Despite these efforts, the teen sustained serious injuries. Willis, who has extensive experience in law enforcement, emphasized the traumatic nature of such incidents for all involved, including the injured teen, the trooper grappling with his actions, and the teen's mother witnessing the shooting. He also expressed concern about the 17-year-old carrying a firearm and urged parents to have open conversations with their children about the dangers of weapons and their interactions with law enforcement. The teen's actions and the officer's response will be thoroughly investigated by multiple agencies, including the criminal justice system, to determine if the use of force was justified. As the investigation unfolds, the community and the families of both individuals will grapple with the aftermath of this tragic event.
