An American Airlines passenger jet and an Army helicopter collided near Washington, D.C.'s Ronald Reagan National Airport, resulting in a catastrophic crash and the loss of all onboard. This incident marks the deadliest U.S. air crash in nearly 24 years. The investigation is ongoing.

An American Airlines passenger jet collided with an Army Black Hawk helicopter on Wednesday night, resulting in the tragic loss of all onboard. This incident marks the deadliest U.S. air crash in nearly 24 years. The catastrophic collision occurred as the jet was attempting to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, D.C., sending debris cascading into the frigid Potomac River.

The aircraft, originating from Wichita, Kansas, carried a group of figure skaters, their coaches, and family members returning from a development camp following the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.Authorities confirmed on Thursday that there are no survivors and have recovered at least 28 bodies from the crash site. Moments before the scheduled landing, air traffic controllers instructed American Airlines Flight 5342 to utilize a shorter runway, a request the pilots readily accepted. Controllers cleared the plane for landing, and flight tracking data indicated the aircraft adjusting its approach to the new runway. Just under 30 seconds before the collision, an air traffic controller inquired with the helicopter if it had the arriving plane in sight. Another radio transmission followed moments later, instructing the helicopter, 'PAT 25 pass behind the CRJ,' seemingly directing the helicopter to wait for the Bombardier CRJ-701 twin-engine jet to pass. However, there was no response from the helicopter. Seconds later, the devastating collision occurred. The plane's transponder ceased transmitting approximately 2,400 feet (732 meters) short of the runway, roughly over the middle of the Potomac River. The aircraft's wreckage was discovered upside down in three sections, submerged in waist-deep water. The helicopter's remains were also located at the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board is spearheading the investigation with assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration. While the precise cause of the crash remains unknown, President Trump and others have speculated that it could have been averted. Investigators will diligently analyze the moments leading up to the collision, including any communication between the aircraft and air traffic controllers, and a potential loss of altitude by the jet
