Discover how recycling old lithium batteries can recover valuable resources while reducing waste and carbon pollution.

Researchers in Australia have discovered that old lithium batteries that have been thrown away still have much power left. The researchers have suggested that these batteries could be reused to utilize the lithium inside them, in a bid to bring social and economic benefits like creating jobs and reducing waste.

The study also showed that recycling older EV batteries is much cleaner and cheaper. Compared to mining, recycling old materials creates 61% less carbon pollution, uses 83% less energy, and needs 79% less water.A viable solution“By recycling these batteries, you can access not only the remaining lithium—which is already purified to near 99 percent—but you can also retrieve the nickel and the cobalt from these batteries,” said Asad Ali, study lead author and a postdoctoral student at ECU.Researchers point out that many batteries are sitting unused, and this pile will only keep growing. The global market for lithium-ion batteries is expected to rise by 13% each year, with demand reaching about 1,600 kilotons of lithium by 2026. A government report in Australia predicts battery waste could reach 137,000 tons annually.Mining vs recycling“Mining emits up to 37 per cent tons of CO2 per ton of lithium. Recycling processes produce up to 61 percent less carbon emissions than mining and use 83 percent less energy and 79 percent less water than mining,” Mr. Ali noted further.Another corresponding author, Dr. Muhammad Azhar, said that although Australia holds one of the world’s largest hard rock lithium reserves, the recovery of lithium from dead batteries could provide socio-economic benefits and environmental sustainability.“The mining industry offers another source of retired and potentially end-of-life batteries, as the electrification of the mining industry gains momentum. ECU is exploring the second life of these retired lithium batteries,” he added.Challenges to addressWhile the benefits of lithium-ion batteries are obvious, Ms. Sadia Afrin underlined that there were still some hurdles to be addressed.“The rate of innovation significantly outstrips policy development, and the chemical make-up of the batteries also continuously evolves, which makes recycling these batteries more complicated,” said Ms. Afrin, a postdoctoral student at ECU.“There is a definite need for investment into the right infrastructure to create this circular economy, but several Australian companies are looking at the best ways to approach this,” she continued.Solutions following the routeLithium battery recycling does seem like a lucrative option, and it’s happening in several parts of the world as of now.Companies like Umicore from Belgium and Redwood Materials in the United States are already leading the efforts to recycle EV batteries. Companies like CATL are building recycling plants in China to reuse materials for new batteries. That being said, these solutions’ mere existence cannot be considered viable enough to replace mining. Infrastructure, costs, and evolving battery chemistries remain challenges – but momentum is building worldwide.
