The Special Investigating Unit has accused former Eskom CEO André de Ruyter of maladministration after he unilaterally initiated an investigation into corruption at the entity.

Scopa heard that Eskom’s former group chief executive Andre de Ruyter only submitted a report of corruption to the police a day before he appeared before the committee in Parliament. The Special Investigating Unit has accused former Eskom CEO André de Ruyter of maladministration after he unilaterally initiated an investigation into corruption at the entity without the approval and authorisation of the Eskom board.

Briefing Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts on Tuesday, Mothibi said De Ruyter failed to adhere to an important corporate governance requirement and instead excluded the board as the accounting authority at Eskom on this investigation. He added: If he could do that, he would have contracted on behalf of Eskom, but the contract is between private entities to investigate the affairs of a state institution. What I find problematic is that it sets a concerning precedent. That you could have private entities interact and get into contracts themselves to investigate state institutions.
